Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Having a fully matured bone structure (approximately aged 15-16 for females, 16-18 for males), being a non-smoker, and being a generally healthy individual with a potentially functional and aesthetic nose goal make you a likely candidate for a rhinoplasty.

Meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the only way to accurately determine your candidacy.

There are a number of considerations when determining if a rhinoplasty is right for you and a good surgeon will readily inform you of all of them.

Your nose has to be done growing

This is a strict consideration — during the duration of puberty, the cartilage and structure of the nose will continue to grow.

Operating on the structure of the nose during this time will cause it to grow in an abnormal way.

Females typically have a fully matured nose by the age of 15-16 and males by 16-18.

If you are a parent asking this for your child, this is what you should ask the surgeon first, and not how much it would cost.

You Need to Be the Right Age and in Good Health

There are standards for good health for any surgery, e.g. absence of uncontrolled chronic illness, etc.

Like with any other surgery, there should not be any active infections prior to surgery and a candidate must be able to withstand anesthesia.

Smokers would be asked to refrain from smoking for months prior to the surgery, and would be asked to refrain for post-surgery as well, because smoking (and nicotine, in particular) reduces bloodflow and increases the risk of visible scars as well as prolongs the post-operative healing process.

You have specific goals, not vague ones.

It’s impossible for a surgeon to plan around a vague goal like, “I want my nose to look different.” Goals like, “I want to remove this bump on the bridge of my nose,” or, “I want to be able to breathe through my left nostril with ease,” are clear and concise, and are much easier for a surgeon to plan around.

If you have not yet been able to describe what it is exactly that is bothering you about your nose, you may want to take some more time to figure that out before you make an appointment.

A good plastic surgeon will also encourage you to spend this time figuring out what you want, and will not rush you to your surgery date.

You're doing this for yourself

As a patient, you must have specific goals for a surgery. “I want my nose to look different” lacks the detail your surgeon needs to make a plan and provide you with a favorable outcome.

You must have changes you wish to see, such as “I want to reduce the bump on the bridge of my nose” or “I want to breathe through my left nostril without effort.”

You should spend time thinking of specific changes before seeing a surgeon.

A good surgeon will recognize your goals and spend time on these specifics, whereas a bad surgeon will rush you to the operating room.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Before and After Results

When choosing a surgeon, it’s essential to investigate their qualifications, and experience, and examine examples of their previous work through before-and-after photos.

Preference is typically given to board-certified plastic surgeons or otolaryngologists who specialize in Rhinoplasty.

Furthermore, arranging a consultation to discuss objectives and address any concerns is beneficial for determining compatibility.

Signs it might not be the right time

You are still developing in age and in the stages of facial maturation.

You suffer from active illnesses or have chronic disorders that are not stable.

You are unable to meet the requirement of no smoking for the period before and after the surgery.

You are making this decision due to external factors and not because you feel it’s the right personal decision.

You do not have a clear goal aside from saying that you want it to be different.

What happens at a real consultation

During a consultation, a proper medical professional will assess the structure of the face, review the skin, go through the medical history, and ask about personal goals and dreams.

They will be sure to express if there is a surgical option available that will be in line with their anatomical goals. A medical consultation that is true, will not sell, but will assess.
